One of premature twins born to the late Maurice "Lu" and Myrtle Bess Caywood, October 28, 1921 at Florence, Kansas, Albert’s sister recalled how the two were kept warm by placing them in a basket on the door of the oven. As was often the case in those early days his brother succumbed at four months of age. Albert graduated in 1939 from Mackville High School, and enrolled in Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas later that year.
Albert served in the US Army Air Corps, being called to duty in 1942. While he was stationed at Columbus, Ohio he met and later married Dorothy Bordoski, December 9, 1944, in Youngstown, Ohio, He was discharged in 1945, and then entered dental school at the University of Nebraska. Following his graduation from dental school in 1950, he was called back to active duty as a 1st Lt in the Dental Corps, and was stationed in Columbus, Ohio, where he served his required time during the Korean War and attained the rank of Captain.
A well respected Ardmore Dentist, Dr. Caywood began his practice on Lake Murray Drive in 1952; he later moved his office to 15th Avenue, just north of Mercy Memorial Hospital, where he had full hospital privileges.
He continued his studies through Baylor University and was one of two area dentists to provide dental implants. Dr. Caywood also started a separate practice in the 1970’s providing affordable dentures to the public at his clinic on 12th Street. He participated in the University of Oklahoma Dental School’s residency program and trained several dentists who currently practice in Ardmore and the southern Oklahoma area.
His patients described him as humorous, caring and gentle. His staff, some have been with him for 40 plus years, refer to him as “Dr. C” and the “best boss ever!” He continued his practice until April 30, 2012.
Dr. Caywood was a member of the American Dental Association since 1946, Oklahoma Dental Association since 1952, and an active member of the Arbuckle Study Club Professional Organization for many years.
